CANTER steps forward

The Controlling ANTiparasitic resistance in Equines Responsibly (CANTER) initiative has entered a new governance phase under the Responsible Use of Medicines Alliance – Companion Animal and Equine (RUMA CA&E). This transition was announced at the National Equine Forum, two years after CANTER’s initial launch.

Originally established by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), CANTER has coordinated efforts to combat anthelmintic resistance in horses. With the VMD’s governance role concluded, RUMA CA&E will now provide governance, financial and administrative support.

Julia Shrubb, taking on the role of Interim Chair, commented: “Thanks to the collaborative spirit and shared commitment of all involved, CANTER has built strong momentum, particularly with the publication of the CANTER Guidelines for sustainable equine parasite control.”

RUMA CA&E Chair, Gwyn Jones, added: “We are delighted to be working with and supporting CANTER, an organisation whose values closely align with RUMA CA&E’s mission.”

Established in 2020, RUMA CA&E defines principles for responsible medicine use across companion animal and equine sectors, contributing to the One Health agenda. The alliance covers responsible medicine use in dogs, cats, rabbits, small mammals, exotic pets, and equids.

Launched in 2023 following stakeholder meetings, CANTER brings together equestrian sector experts to promote evidence-based parasite control strategies. With RUMA CA&E’s backing, the initiative will continue its essential work ensuring sustainable worming practices remain at the forefront of equine health management.
