Hazel Morley to retire as Chief Executive of The Society of Master Saddlers

The Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) has announced that its long-serving Chief Executive, Hazel Morley, will retire on 16 September 2025 after more than 30 years of service.

Hazel joined the Society in 1994 as a part-time administrative assistant, supporting then Chief Executive Tony Russell. Following Tony’s sudden death in 2002, Hazel stepped into the role of Executive Secretary before being appointed Chief Executive in 2004.

During her two decades at the helm, Hazel has overseen major developments within the Society and the wider trade. She was instrumental in achieving City & Guilds accreditation for SMS saddle and bridle fitting qualifications, securing the Society’s appointment as the End Point Assessment Organisation for Level 2 and 3 saddlery apprenticeships, and gaining OFQUAL recognition.

In 2023, Hazel was awarded a Fellowship of the Society for her outstanding contribution.

Reflecting on her career, Hazel said: “After more than 30 years working for the Society, I can truly say it’s been a privilege to lead the organisation through such a varied and rewarding journey… I leave confident that the Society is in great hands with our new team.”
