HRH The Princess Royal observes horse care activities at Aintree
The British Horse Society (BHS) welcomed Vice Patron HRH The Princess Royal to Aintree Racecourse this week for a special celebration of equine care and welfare. Held at the BHS Approved Aintree International Equestrian Centre, the day featured interactive sessions led by industry experts, covering:
- Recognising subtle signs of discomfort
- Fitting tack and equipment
- Equine dental care
With over 200 people in attendance, the day was an opportunity for horse lovers to engage with horse care and welfare engagement activities, as well as learn how important it is to build trust with their own equine companions.
Attendees also watched an exclusive demonstration by the Merseyside Police Mounted Section, showcasing how police horses are trained to respond to varied scenarios with calm and trust.
“It was a real privilege to share such an important day at Aintree with HRH The Princess Royal,” said James Hick, BHS Chief Executive. “We know how vital it is to build a strong relationship with our horses. If we don’t understand our horses, then both their wellbeing and our own could be compromised.”
HRH presented awards to two longstanding volunteers: Dyane Starkey and Deborah Rutherford, both recognised for their exceptional service in the North West. James added: “Our volunteers are the beating heart of our charity and we wouldn’t be able to do the work we do without them.”
A commemorative plaque was unveiled to mark the occasion.
