HRH The Princess Royal opens refurbished HJ Lea Equine Mill

HJ Lea proudly welcomed Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to officially open its recently refurbished equine mill in Malpas, marking a momentous year in the company’s long-standing history. The visit came as part of HRH’s wider tour, which included a stop at sister company Morning Foods, and coincided with the 350th anniversary of the Lea family’s milling heritage.

Founded in 1675 by William Lea at Swettenham Mill, Cheshire, HJ Lea has evolved over centuries while retaining its focus on quality and innovation. The business relocated its Equine and Specialist Feed division to Malpas in 2013, and now exports premium nutrition solutions to more than 50 countries.

Highlights from the visit:

  • Unveiling of the restored 1906 mill building, now blending heritage with modern technology.
  • Future development plans including a mill extension, additional warehousing, green energy production and 25 acres for crop and feeding trials.
  • Presentation of a world-class food safety and clean sport laboratory under construction with Morning Foods.

Managing Director Edward Lea said: “It was a great honour to welcome Her Royal Highness today and to celebrate this new chapter in our history. The refurbished mill is one step in our ambition to lead, innovate and to champion sustainability in equine nutrition.”

HRH The Princess Royal unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
