Equestrian fashion business founder Laura Jeanne with Harry Redknapp in the paddock

Self-funded racing fashion label passes £100,000 in six months

Hertfordshire equine artist Laura Jeanne has built an equestrian fashion business that turned over more than £100,000 in six months, with no investment. The label shows the demand for horse-themed clothing and accessories among racegoers, a customer group that spends on raceday style.

Laura Jeanne first made her name painting racehorses. She sold her first portrait in 2017 and, within days, her whole collection had sold, leaving her with a steady stream of commissions.

As she became more involved in the racing community she identified a gap in the market for racing-specific fashion. Drawing on her fashion studies at the University of Hertfordshire, she launched a range of equestrian ties and pocket squares.

Hundreds of ties have been sold so far and global brands are already showing interest in the business. Her designs have been worn by figures from sport and racing, including former football manager Harry Redknapp, former England football captain John Terry and champion jockey Oisin Murphy, giving the label valuable exposure at the races.

Laura Jeanne’s equestrian fashion business at a glance

  • More than £100,000 turnover in six months, with no investment
  • Range: equestrian ties and pocket squares, the Chelsea Rose coat, a trench coat and a first handbag about to launch
  • Chelsea Rose coat: fitted, six colourways, corset lacing on the back
  • Website: laurajeanne.com

The business is now concentrating on the women’s racing fashion market. Its Chelsea Rose coat, a fitted design available in six colourways with intricate corset lacing on the back, has sold out, and a trench coat has followed. The first Laura Jeanne handbag is about to launch.

Her success highlights the opportunity in raceday and country fashion, where distinctive equestrian-themed accessories such as ties and pocket squares can make an easy add-on sale or gift, particularly in the run-up to Christmas and the busy winter jump racing season.
