
VMD Launches Research Initiative on Anthelmintic Resistance in UK Equines
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is set to launch a research initiative focusing on anthelmintic resistance in ascarids affecting foals and youngstock on UK stud farms. This important study aims to enhance understanding and management strategies to combat increasing resistance levels.
The project, as outlined in a Prior Information Notice (PIN) on the Find a Tender service, is scheduled to invite tenders starting the week of 6 May 2024. The VMD’s research will explore the current efficacy of various authorised anthelmintic classes against ascarid populations, examining egg shedding dynamics and evaluating existing management strategies across UK stud farms.
Anthelmintic resistance (AR) poses a significant threat to equine health, compromising the ability to control parasitic diseases effectively. As resistance to critical anthelmintic classes such as macrocyclic lactones, benzimidazoles, and tetrahydropyrimidines increases globally, there is a pressing need for data to inform and refine best practice guidelines in the UK.
This research is integral to the broader efforts of the new pan-industry equine group, CANTER (Controlling ANTIparasitic Resistance in Equines Responsibly), which aims to develop evidence-based guidelines to delay the progression of AR. CANTER, with representation from the VMD on its Core Steering Group, focuses on sustainable parasite control strategies that align with the health and welfare of the UK horse population while minimising environmental impacts.
The upcoming study will not only provide valuable UK-specific data on the efficacy of anthelmintic treatments but will also help identify management factors that influence treatment outcomes and the variance in ascarid prevalence and egg shedding. Insights gained will inform the development of new strategies to manage resistance and enhance anthelmintic stewardship programmes, ultimately supporting the VMD’s policy on anthelmintic resistance.
